Why do professionals immediately feel the difference?
There is one thing most experienced professionals instantly recognise, even before your treatment is complete.
The moment a formula touches your skin, your therapist will feel how it behaves. How the product spreads, does it absorb, how it integrates with your skin and whether it has been engineering properly.

This isn’t guesswork – its formulation at work!
Formulation and product behaviour is something we recognise as professionals, having spent many hours applying and using products throughout our careers.
“Professionals don’t need to read the label first, they can feel how the formula was built.”
A personal perspective
Over the years, I’ve personally seen and experienced this phenomenon again and again.
Certain formulas absorb seamlessly into the skin. A great formulation will support the massage phase and then maintain the correct level of workability while responding to your skin, exactly as expected and desired.
A poor formulation will feel unpredictable. These lesser products are likely to sit on the surface, absorb unevenly, or lose their structure during application.
As professionals, we know this has nothing to do with technique. It has everything to do with how the formula was engineered in the laboratory.
Most people reasonably assume that skincare performance is determined by the ingredients alone.
Professional performance is defined by something far more precise – how the formula is constructed to behave on living skin.
Skincare formulation
Every formula has a molecular structure, viscosity profile, and absorption curve. These determine how the product moves across the skin, how quickly it integrates, and how stable it remains during treatment.
Your skin itself is not static during a facial treatment. Several physiological changes occur including;
- temperature increases,
- microcirculation rises,
- the barrier becomes more receptive,
- surface hydration levels shift, and
- sebum and water content fluctuate.
These changes directly influence how a formula behaves.
A properly engineered professional formula must remain stable and functional while these changes occur.
If absorbed too quickly, the product cannot support proper massage. If absorption is too slow, it remains superficial and cannot interact effectively with the skin. The balance must be precise!
As I’ve said many times over the years, “When a formula is engineered correctly, the skin responds immediately. As a professional I can feel the difference.”

The good
This is the reason skincare which is developed within specialised laboratory environments performs differently AND performs much better!
Laboratories not only control the ingredients, but the very architecture of the formula itself. Many hours are spent developing and testing how each product spreads, how it absorbs and how it interacts with the skin barrier. The final test being performance under real treatment conditions and visible results.
Nothing is left to assumption – this level of control ensures consistency and predictability.
Most importantly, it assures professional performance in the salon. Hence why professional skincare systems feel cohesive and often much more effective.
Each formula has been designed to work in harmony within a system of products. The textures, absorption rates and functional behaviour align so the treatment flows naturally from one step to the next.
This level of precision cannot be improvised – it must be engineered!
And the not so good
On the flip-side, I’ve also seen the opposite results.
These products appear impressive externally with flashy packaging and a laundry list of trending ingredients, but reveal their limitations the moment they touch the skin.
Often within seconds, the your skin reveals what the packaging never could.
Because true performance cannot be judged by shiny or elaborate packaging, high pressure marketing, or unreasonable claims. The true test of a great skincare product lies in and is revealed through behaviour.
“Skin never lies. It responds honestly to how well a formula was designed.”
This is the fundamental difference your professional will recognise immediately. Not because they were told, but because years of training and experience allow them to feel and recognise the distinctions.
And this difference always begins in the laboratory!
